Up Your Marketing In a Down Economy

Happy New Year everyone!  It seems that when we left off before the holidays, there wasn't quite the scramble to compensate for the economy and the issues it was bringing to the legal industry.  Now, just over a month later, and four major law firm dissolutions later, it is the ONLY topic on everyone's mind. To that end, InsideLegal will provide comprehensive coverage on economic issues as they relate to the legal technology landscape. Beyond that, we are recruitting a slew of reputable consultants, legal IT, firm contacts, and other legal commentators to provide insight into the topics that matter most to you.

With that said …more often than not in a down economy, the first thing that law firms and vendors do is cut back on their marketing efforts.  We have been speaking with vendors lately and have heard that very thing from almost all of them.  Based on our experience, this is a strategy that is extremely counterproductive, and counterintuitive based on the long term goals of growth and increasing market awareness.

It is important to continue with your marketing plan to maintain the momentum. Also, by doing so, you separate yourself from your competitors and other market players.  With keeping your marketing investment the same in a down economy, you actually accomplish more and have an increased presence among other companies that are pulling way back.  This puts you at the forefront of your prospects and keeps you top of mind.  Another benefit is that you're making goodwill points with your vendors (events, publications, agencies, etc.) that are in the same position that you're in. This not only gives you 'bonus points', but goes a long way in building long term vendor partnerships.

So, after evaluating your marketing mix, think twice about cutting costs. If you must cut, look at taking the reduction from across all line items.  For example, it would give you better results to do an event, but cut out the sponsorship or reduce ad sizes instead of completely cutting your event or advertising line items. Also, get creative on cost cutting – partner with other vendors for group buying power – look at co-op ads, seek alternatives to expensive printing and mailing options, etc.

What is your organization doing in this regard?  We'd love to hear from you.

Legal Assistant Today Acquired by Conexion International Media

According to a press release we received today, the publishers of Litigation Support Today have acquired Legal Assistant Today magazine from James Publishing (who used to publish the very popular Law Office Computing).  We could not find the announcement on either website to link to, so below is the press release content.

"The leading magazine for the paralegal profession, Legal Assistant Today, has been acquired by Conexion International Media, Inc., publishers of Litigation Support Today, from James Publishing, Inc. Legal Assistant Today is the only independent national trade magazine written exclusively for paralegals. It has been published continuously for more than 25 years and it is the established authority in the paralegal field. The acquisition provides legal marketers with a new combination of' 'sister' magazines for more efficient advertising to both the litigation support field and the paralegal field, the two most influential target audiences in today's complex and rapidly growing legal marketplace. Special combination rates are available for 2009 advertisers, including print ads, conference activity, and online opportunities allowing marketers to make the most of the synergism between the paralegal profession and the litigation support profession.

The new owners have stated that their vision for the development of Legal Assistant Today is to sustain the excellent editorial quality and usefulness of the magazine while introducing new enhancements and techniques that will expand readership and attract more advertisers. Charles Buckwalter, VP of Conexion International Media, says 'The reader loyalty that this great magazine commands is outstanding, with 91% of subscribers reporting that they keep their back issues and share them firm-wide. Subscription renewals are also very high. We intend to build on LAT's strong, legitimate base of paid subscribers and expand circulation to better serve the information needs of the paralegal profession and to give advertisers greater penetration into this escalating marketplace.'  The U.S. Department of Labor reports there are 220,000 paralegals/legal assistants today and the profession is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2010.

The dizzying impact of e-discovery and other high-technology demands on every aspect of the legal practice has caused many vendors to be uncertain which professional audience and which media are best suited for their tight advertising budgets in the fierce competitive months ahead. The publishing amalgamation of Legal Assistant Today and Litigation Support Today, both solid leaders in their own niche yet parallel markets, now provides the optimum media combination for efficient reach to the primary influences and users in each of the two key segments that are on the leading edge of the market's expansion."

Am Law Tech 2008: 13th Annual Technology Survey of Am Law 200 firms

The 13th Annual Am Law Technology Survey was published this week in law.com's Legal Technology Bulletin and provides another look (in addition to ILTA's Technology Survey and the 2008 ILTA Legal Technology Purchasing Survey) at what technology Am Law 200 firms are using and what issues and challenges are paramount. The survey includes charts spanning software, budgets, communications, operations, quality of life, technology developments, and wireless preferences.

Here's an excerpt of the lead article written by Incisive Media frequent contributor, Alan Cohen:

" … Of all the findings our thirteenth annual technology survey of Am Law 200 firms turned up, the most important was this: Law firm chief information officers and IT directors have a lot on their minds. Among the issues they're grappling with: What emerging technologies are worth investing in — and which aren't ready for prime time? Should increasingly tech-savvy attorneys be able to download software they find on their own, or should firms vet everything first? Does the new generation of Web 2.0 tools — blogs, wikis and social networking sites — have a place in a law firm environment? And, of course, the real brainteaser: How can the enormous quantities of data lawyers generate possibly be managed?"

Want to Know What Technology Large Law Firms Are Buying in the Next 12 Months? 2008 ILTA Legal Technology Purchasing Survey Report Now Online!

Want to know what the large firm members of ILTA (100+ attys) are purchasing in the next 12 months? What they implemented in the last 12 months? How they make IT purchasing decisions? Which legal trade and IT publications they keep at their desk? And what vendors they feel have given exceptional customer service?

Again this year, we have partnered with ILTA to conduct their annual member purchasing survey and now you can download the 2008 ILTA Legal Technology Purchasing Survey for free! We presented the findings at the Vendor Program we produce with ILTA at the ILTA Annual Conference and have received a very positive response from the vendor community. We encourage you to download the full report, but here are a few snippets to get the juices flowing …

  • Budgets continue to increase for most firms, but at a slower pace than in past years.  Notably, less firms are allocating 5+% of their budgets on IT.

  • Firms are closely measuring IT spending and using per-attorney technology expenditures as benchmark data.  We added IT spend based on revenue and per attorney technology spend and compared to UK trends.

  • Big winners in the technology implementation and purchasing categories are Virtualization and SharePoint.

  • ILTA whitepapers are on everybody’s mind with 80% readership.

  • Third party consultants are actively involved in firm IT project especially with implementations and, to a lesser degree, aiding in the technology selection process.

  • Staffing shortages and e-mail management continue to challenge IT staffs as do M&A activity and storage needs, especially with the volumes of email.

The value and power of the information contained in this survey is based on ILTA member and vendor feedback so please let us know how we can improve upon this research and make necessary changes to keep this information pertinent.
