InsideLegal Likes… Tom Mighell’s ‘iPad 4 Lawyers’

IPadinOneHourforLawyers
Recently, legal technologist extraordinaireTom Mighell authored a book entitled "iPad in One Hour for Lawyers" (published by ABA) and an accompanying blog entitled iPad 4 Lawyers. Although I'm not an attorney, iPad 4 Lawyers has become one of my favorite sites to assist with selecting apps, helfpul tips and tricks and in general improving how I incorporate my iPad into my work day. The most recent posts on the blog cover options for hosting meetings from your iPad; handling zip files; encrypting your backups and managing files.

Attorney or not, the blog and the book are definitely recommended for anyone new to the iPad or anyone who wants to learn to use it more efficiently.

You can also follow Tom on twitter (@TomMighell) and subscribe to Tom's podcast with Dennis KennedyThe Kennedy-Mighell Report.

Open Memo to Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg on his $25B Mistake from Legal Vendor CEO

For all the time we spend talking about, playing with, and obsessing over new technology for new technology's sake (think new Best Buy commercial), it is truly refreshing to see a technology innovation 'cause and effect' real world case study. Well, we just got off the phone with Zafar Khan, an old legal industry friend and CEO of registered email technology RPost. Zafar told us about an Open Memo he recently wrote to Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, in response to a lawsuit filed by Paul Ceglia where he claims to have emails from 2004 which show Mark Zuckerberg allotted him 50% of Facebook equity.

Zafar, who's company's core principle is built around RPost’s Registered Email service that protects the sender with a legal electronic messaging capability, is well versed in the relevant authentication/ admissibility legal questions and as such has assisted in establishing international standards for what constitutes a legally valid and court admissible record of who said what to whom, by email and at what point in time. The memo provides a very easy to understand (not typical case law) list of common email misconceptions especially as it relates to their proof of 'who said what to whom by email' and illustrates why Ceglia's case might not be as strong as once hoped … all because certain email certification and encryption technologies now readily available to attorneys where not used in the now infamous 2004 email streams between Paul Ceglia and Mark Zuckerberg.

The entire memo can be read here. Also, we will let you know if Zafar hears back from Zuckerberg who was hand delivered the memo today.

Law Firm Technology Purchasing Annual Resource – Looking for Your Input

InsideLegal/ILTA 2010 Member Technology Purchasing Survey Each year since 2006, InsideLegal and ILTA have partnered to produce the Annual ILTA Member Technology Purchasing Survey. This is a comprehensive, free market resource for ILTA members, non-ILTA firms, consultants/technologists and vendors to gauge the industry and develop a benchmark on what their peers/prospects are doing. The survey includes feedback from hundreds of ILTA law firms with 50 or more attorneys.

Since we produce this survey for the industry, we'd like your help and input. We are open to ideas and always looking to improve and update the survey, especially when it comes to the technology areas.

Please email us any suggestions you have for questions by June 3rd and we will evaluate them for inclusion in the 2011 survey that we present at the Annual ILTA Conference in Nashville August 21-25. If you would like to be included on the distribution list to receive the 2011 survey, sign up (for free) with your email at InsideLegal.com.

You can download the complete 2010 survey here, but below are some of the areas we currently cover:

  • What the law firms bought in the last 12 months
  • What the firms are buying in the next 12 months
  • What technologies are you most excited about
  • Are budgets increasing or decreasing
  • How much can they sign off for vs. what has to go to executive committee
  • How much they spend per attorney on technology
  • What blogs/publications do they read
  • What influences/aids in their purchasing decision
  • What percentage of firm revenue do they spend on technology
  • Their/their users satisfaction with technologies implemented
  • What consultants they are working with

In addition, every year, we dive a bit deeper into one hot topic. In the past, we have included in-depth analysis on topics including eDiscovery, virtualization, SaaS and most recently, cloud computing. Any hot topic you would like considered should be emailed our way as well.

ALA’s Annual Conference: A Visual ‘Sneak Peek’

The 2011 Annual Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) Conference & Exposition (May 22-25th) is about to kick off and we have a quick preview of what's on tap this week via a visual agenda word cloud. With a focus on member firms, management and general learning, this show is on track to deliver a variety of educational content that is vital to legal administrators – a nice departure from the eDiscovery saturated conferences we have gotten used to in our market. Having just returned from LegalTech West Coast and it's heavy eDiscovery focus (except for ILTA's technology-driven advanced IT track), we look forward to ALA's focus on management issues and the discussions it sparks.

Below is the word cloud from the agenda for the 2011 Association of Legal Administrators Annual Conference. Click to enlarge…

New Global Legal IT Survey Worth Checking Out – Legal IT Landscapes

Legalsupportnetwork We just finished a thorough read of a new, broad based legal IT professionals technology survey definitely worth talking about. Co-produced by our friends UK-based legalsupportnetwork and LITP Netherlands-headquartered Legal IT Professionals, the "Legal IT Landscapes" survey includes some key issues on the legal IT chief’s desk – cloud computing, tablet PCs, social media use, business intelligence (BI), document management and Microsoft SharePoint and desktop solutions – as well as how IT people see their role in terms of its status and its future. The survey includes data from 712 responses from legal IT and legal management professionals worldwide, with the bulk of the responses coming from the UK, US and mainland Europe. According to the report, the spread of law firm sizes was well represented, although 60+% of all responses came from firms with 251+ fee earners/time keepers.

We encourage all to check out the full 26 page PDF report, but below are a few of the findings that caught our attention…

  • A third of respondents said their firms are either already using social media tools to enable information sharing and collaboration, or are looking to develop this capability in 2011.
  • Three quarters (73.6%) of CIO/CTOs said their firm is either “examining how to expand” tablet use or “planning how we can do more with them in 2011”. This view was shared by those at director and manager level, with IT directors the highest at over 82%.
  • Big firms were most negative towards cloud – 60% of those in firms with over 501 fee-earners said the cloud has “serious compliance issues” – while the smallest firms were most positive.
  • The UK leads in BI adoption by a large margin – seven in 10 respondents in UK firms said their firm uses BI, compared to just under six in 10 in mainland Europe and even fewer in the US, which reported just 58% adoption.
  • Overall, nearly a half of the legal IT people we questioned (46%) said that “partners are gradually recognising that IT plays an increasingly important role and are open to more IT involvement in determining the firm’s strategy"… But overall only 15% said 2011 would see more CIOs and IT directors becoming part of law firm management boards in 2011.
  • The UK had the highest number of respondents who said IT is on a “level playing field with all the other business services departments”, with over a quarter (27.6%) of respondents feeling this confident about their role…

Am Law 100 Report Released

Am Law 100 2011 The Am Law 100, the annual report published by ALM's The American Lawyer since 1987, was recently released. You can view the complete press release here, but below is a look at some of the results.

  • The Am Law 100's overall gross revenue rose 4%. Although, Editor-in-Chief of The American Lawyer Robin Sparkman notes, "It's also critical to note that much of The Am Law 100's revenue growth came from two giants—DLA Piper and Hogan Lovells, a pair of firms whose worldwide revenues are being included in The Am Law 100 for the first time, because of a change in our methodology. Leaving out those two anomalies, The Am Law 100's average revenue went up a meager 1.4 percent."
  • Profits-per-partner (PPP) increased 8.4%, averaging $1,366,695 for the group.
  • Quinn Emanuel led the group with a 31% increase in gross revenue (to $550.5 million).
  • Quinn Emanuel's PPP also climbed 15.7% from 2009 to $3.62 million.
  • Alston & Bird led the Am Law 100 in PPP growth at 34%.
  • Revenues-per-lawyer (RPL), increased 4.4% last year, powered by a combination of head count cuts and a modest uptick in billing rates.
  • Top 5 firms by revenue
    1. Baker & McKenzie ($2.104 billion)
    2. Skadden ($2.1 billion)
    3. DLA Piper ($1.961 billion)
    4. Latham & Watkins ($1.929 billion)
    5. Hogan Lovells ($1.665 billion)

Robin Sparkman, Editor in Chief of The American Lawyer, said, "Average attorney head count fell 2.7 percent last year, the biggest drop since we started ranking The Am Law 100 almost 25 years ago."

Complete Am Law 100 spreadsheet data is available for online purchase at ALM Legal Intelligence, but below are a few links to free data.

ABA TECHSHOW Turns 25: One more Reflection & Our “60 Tips” Favorites

> > > InsideLegal Photos of ABA TECHSHOW 2011 < < <

ABA TECHSHOW 2011 Earlier this April, Jobst and I attended the 25th anniversary of the ABA LPM Section's ABA TECHSHOW. I have to say that over the years TECHSHOW, along with the Annual ILTA Conference, have become my favorites in our space. This year was my 12th year attending and as always, it was a pleasure to visit with the'family' of volunteers (also known as the 'who's who of legal technology) that sacrifice precious time throughout the year to put this event on.

TECHSHOW above all is about connections & networking… I reminisce about the first connected event, the "Consultants & Technologists Dinner" (THE DINNER) that Ross Kodner and I used to produce (2003-2006) and more recently, our co-produced events with Matt Homann of LexThink, including LexThink Lounge in 2006 and Ignite Law last year and this year (you can read our coverage of Ignite here and, yes, we'll have the videos up on the website soon!). Staging these 'socials' has not only allowed us to get to know the volunteers and speakers, but give the collective TECHSHOW family a chance to mingel and re-connect.

ABA TECHSHOW Chair, Paul Unger This year's TECHSHOW began for us with the ABA's Opening Reception. Up at the podium first was Andrea Hartley, Chair of the ABA Law Practice Management Section to welcome everyone to the event and introduce this year's TECHSHOW Chair, Paul Unger. We have worked with Paul Unger and his team quite a bit this year to bring Ignite Law to the TECHSHOW audience and it was nice to see all his work come to fruition.

The highlight of the event was the Silver Jubilee Reception MCed by Simon Chester, and hosted by Phil Shuey, Storm Evans, and Jim Calloway who reviewed the last 25 years of TECHSHOW and all the emerging technologies (from fax machines to social media for lawyers) that left their mark, year in and year out. A standout was the technology game changers (in InsideLegal's photo album above) – typewriter, IBM, fax machine, the blue screen of WordPerfect – and the technology museum including original floppy disks, the original BlackBerry, the Palm Pilot, Commodore 64, and the Apple IIGS (provided by proud owner Brett Burney).

60 Sites in 60 Minutes

Our favorite session at TECHSHOW each year is "60 Sites in 60 Minutes", this year featuring Jim Calloway, Eric Mazzone, Sharon Nelson and Paul Unger. Here are some of our favorite site tips from this year…

  • Pamela for Skype – Recording Skype Calls and Videos
  • AttorneyatWork – "One Really Good Idea Every Day"
  • ge.tt - The best way to publish and share your files
  • spamgourmet – Self-destructing disposable email addresses for when you want to give someone an email address they can use for you a few times
  • 280 Slides - Create beautiful presentations, access them from anywhere, and share them with the world – no software to download and nothing to pay for.
  • Topicmarks – Summarizes text documents electronically. Like Cliffs Notes for your own documents.
  • FileGenuis - Web-based, expertly hosted, secure file transfer, exchange, and management application, exclusively for business use.
  • Chrome Web Store – Search for apps and extensions to 'pimp out' your Google Chrome browser.
  • Greplin – "The search bar for your life." Greplin indexes the information you create on different websites (like Gmail, Twitter and Facebook) and provides fast search of all your information.
  • YouSendIt – Makes sending and receiving large files easy and works with Outlook.
  • KeepVid – Download online streaming videos to use offline.

These are just a few of the great tips that were shared by the panel. You can also check out the list from "60 Apps in 60 Minutes" shared by iPhone J.D., Jeff Richardson, Reid Trautz and Josh Barrett and coverage of "60 Tips in 60 Minutes" paneled by Andy Adkins, Michael Morse and Nerino Petro here and here.
