A Tech Conference That Utilizes Technology – Brilliant!

ILTA Is it too much to assume a base level of technological sophistication when attending a technology trade show or event (in our case, legal technology event)? Judging by what we have seen across various conferences over the years, the answer, sadly, seems to be yes. Accordingly, we have lowered our expectations when it comes to conference technology access and the use of technology to better the user experience and reluctantly fought with non-existent or unreliable onsite internet access, pitiful bandwidth, and spotty cell phone coverage in key conference areas… Although ILTA has always been on top of these items, the 2011 ILTA Conference provided the basic technology needed and raised the bar to show us just how technology can be used to greatly enhance the attendees’ experience.

Internet Access – Ahh…the Little Things

Wifi signal bars It may sound ridiculous at this day and age to start with wireless internet access, but let's be honest. That is NOT always, or even usually, something that is available at legal technology shows. If you are even lucky enough to have access to wireless at a conference, it usually isn't free. If it is free, you have to join the underground network to get the code – even though you are using it to promote their show. Neither the availability nor the cost were an issue at ILTA this year. ILTA sent out an email with the internet access information and codes the Friday before the conference to avoid any confusion onsite. Not only were there networks available from anywhere on the property, they also had a separate network for attendees to connect to from their wireless devices.

ILTA Mobile App – One of My Favorite Tools!

ILTA iPad App With the basics solidly covered, ILTA also raised the stakes on their conference Mobile App which debuted last year. Last year, I had the iPhone app installed and it was helpful. It was one of the first apps for a legal technology show that we had seen that wasn't just a link to a mobile webpage. This year, however, the ILTA Mobile App reached a whole new level. The mobile App provided access to the conference agenda, speaker details, attendee list, exhibitor info, exhibit hall map, Gaylord Resort info, Twitter integration, personalized agenda setup, latest ILTA News and more. It was made available on Apple iPhone/iPad, Android and Blackberry smartphones and a mobile website was offered for anyone not covered under that list. We were curious to see how many people utilized this tool and so we reached out to Clay Gibney, ILTA's IT Director who spearheaded this program. Here are the installation numbers…

  • 1,024 iPad installations
  • 984 iPhone installations
  • 540 Blackberry installations
  • 361 Android installations
  • 300+ unique visitors to mobile web version

In addition to the 2,909 installed apps getting the attendees where they need to be, the mobile apps also enabled attendees to complete session evaluations (over 3,740 session evaluations submitted via the app) and to participate in session polls with 2,300 submissions.

Conference iPad Rentals

Another program we were really impressed with, although not as widely utilized, was their iPad rental program. This allowed attendees to rent Wi-Fi iPad 2 tablets for the duration of the conference for only $50. In addition to providing a valuable conference tool, this was also a great way for anyone on the fence about really wanting an iPad to take it for a test-drive.

ILTA and InsideLegal Release 2011 ILTA/InsideLegal Technology Purchasing Survey

ILTA            Insidelegal

The International Legal Technology Association (ILTA), and InsideLegal just released the findings of the 6th annual ILTA/InsideLegal Technology Purchasing Survey (Survey). The 2011 Survey, focused on feedback from ILTA member law firms with 50 or more attorneys, covers detailed legal technology budget questions; updated information on firms’ social media preferences; an in-depth analysis of cloud computing; and sections on technology outsourcing and IT challenges.

Survey findings and analysis are being presented as part of InsideLegal’s vendor education program in conjunction with ILTA’s Annual Conference, taking place at the Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, August 21-25.

The 33 question web-based survey was distributed to approximately 684 law firms, ranging from 50 to 3,000 attorneys, and yielded 118 unique firm responses. 84% of all participating firms came from the U.S., with the remaining 16% originating from Canada, the UK, Australia, and Brazil. 85% of all survey respondents are IT Directors or C-Level executives, and 86% have direct purchasing or purchasing committee responsibility.

2011 Survey highlights include:

  • Overall firm technology spending, as a percentage of firm revenue and based on per attorney spend, is still down from pre-2009 economic downturn figures.
  • 57% of all responding firms spend between 2-4% of total firm revenue on technology.
  • 46% of survey participants indicated spending $8K-$17K per attorney on technology purchases, the same response rate as in 2010.
  • While budget slashing has been curtailed, keeping budgets balanced has taken priority with 35% indicating their budgets remained the same.
  • The top five technology implementations within the last 12 months included desktop hardware; laptops/notebooks; network/server upgrades; storage area networks and virtualization.
  • While ILTA’s Peer to Peer Magazine and ILTA whitepapers remain ‘favorite’ reads, 5 of the top 10 favorite publications mentioned by respondents are non-legal, general technology publications.
  • Of the 52% who indicated using Twitter, many of them (27%) have an account but don’t actively use it.
  • 44% of this year’s respondents reported they use outside technology consultants to aid in making purchasing decisions.
  • Internet research was cited as the 2nd most popular influence in terms of aiding IT purchasing decisions (next to peer recommendations).
  • 33% indicated they are implementing a cloud strategy, up from 17% in 2010 and 9% in 2009.
  • 55% of surveyed firms provide IT support for employees that purchase and use their personal tablet devices.

ADERANT Goes on Acquisition Spree with Purchase of CompuLaw & Client Profiles/CRM4Legal

ADERANT Plus CompuLaw Plus ClientProfiles

Welcome to ILTA 2011 in Nashville … welcome to limitless networking, educational sessions, receptions, meet-ups, parties and of course BIG vendor news … First up this year, financial practice management provider ADERANT and it's 'double whammy' acquisition of LA-based CompuLaw LLC and Atlanta's Client Profiles, including their CRM4Legal division. (View the official press release and FAQ here). This trifecta features some very well known brands within the legal technology niche: CompuLaw, a family-owned and operated business, has a 30+ year track record of serving the calendaring and court rule automation needs of large law fims, and with the introduction of it's web-based/SaaS offering Deadlines.com, also catering to smaller firms and solos who need help with calendaring and court deadlines but without the big firm budgets. ADERANT has its own calendar/docket modules (as part of ADERANT Expert) and currently integrates with CompuLaw's court rules so now owning this segment makes sense (after all, who wouldn't want marketshare among 82% of the top 50 law firms in California, and more than 70% of the AmLaw 100). Client Profiles, which first made a name for itself with truly 'end-to-end' case management software for small(ish) and medium law firms, struck it well several years back by partnering with Microsoft Dynamics CRM and developing a legal-specific client relationship management application branded CRM4Legal. We suspect case management will mostly compliment what ADERANT already has and CRM4Legal will greatly bolster the provider's marketing offering.

While we spend this week in Nashville (and beyond) filling in the blanks on the details of the deal – what this really means to clients, prospects, the market, partners and integrators – we wish all parties well and hope they continue to serve the legal community as they have done for the better part of 35 years.

Just in Time for ILTA…Useful Media Do’s & Dont’s from Legal Technology Editors Charles Christian & Monica Bay

Just in Time for ILTA…Here are some media tips from two leading industry editors on how to work with them for coverage of your product/company news. Both Charles and Monica, along with Randi Mayes, ILTA's Executive Director and the Editor for Peer to Peer Magazine, will be serving on our media panel at the ILTA/InsideLegal Vendor Education Program this Monday at the ILTA Annual Conference in Nashville. After the session, we will be having a vendor reception to give vendors a chance to meet our panelists. For now, here are their tips to consider when contacting them.

CharlesChristian PR Ten commandments from Charles Christian, Editor of American Legal Technology Insider (ALTi) & The Orange Rag

  1. PRs who can't get my name right – it's Charles not Christian.
  2. Who don't understand what my market & industry is all about (I specialize in the technology that lawyers use NOT the legal issues surrounding the use of technology).
  3. Who are clearly unfamiliar with my publications despite the fact access to the blog is free and there is a section on the newsletter website headed If you are a PR please read this first (True story: a friend recently received an email from a PR agency that read "We really enjoy reading <insert name of publication here> and would like to interest you in a story etc etc…")
  4. Who seem to think I was born yesterday and will accept their claims that their client, who is brand new to the market, not only knows everything there is to know but is sufficiently qualified to tell genuine market leaders where they have been going wrong all these years. This is the equivalent of a photocopier salesman telling Steve Jobs of Apple that he'd sell more kit if he switched to Microsoft Windows. Credibility it ain't.
  5. Who seem to think I was born yesterday and will accept their claims that their client has just sold a major order to a major player in the market but without mentioning any names or deal prices. Sorry guys and gals, selling an entry-level PC to a One-Man-&-A-Dog operation is not front page news. No names = No fame (or column inches)
  6. Offer me an exclusive story and then reveal it has already been issued as a press relese to other publications. Bit of a problem with understanding the definition of exclusive is there?
  7. Offer me an exclusive story and then try to un-offer it because they think they may be able to get a better deal with a national newspaper. (They never do.)
  8. Expect me to fight their commercial battles for them – typically they would like me to defame their competitors.
  9. Send me snotty letter complaining that I did not use the stupid typography their sTUPiD cLIENT insists on using but instead ran it as Stupid Client. My response here is always the same: last time I checked I was still the editor and publisher so I'll use whatever typography layout I want – however if they would like to buy my publication then they can do whatever they like with the typography.
  10. Cannot spell the names of their own clients correctly – no, this really does happen.

MonicaBay Quick Tips from Monica Bay, Editor-in-Chief of Law Technology News magazine

  • Do your homework before you pitch. Read the publication, know what it covers, and more importantly, what they do not cover. Nothing marks you as a neophyte faster than, for example, suggesting a Q&A when the publication never runs them.
  • Don’t use industry jargon in product press releases. Most product news “gatekeepers” are new journalists, often in their first job. They may have no context of either legal or technology. For the most accurate coverage, use plain English.
  • Don’t call the editor to ask if they got your press release. But be sure to put full contact information on the press releases so editors can reach you if they need further information.
  • If your press release is about an upgrade of a product, be sure to describe the underlining product. Don’t assume the reporters will remember.
  • If you are conducting a demonstration, carefully monitor the body language of the reporter — to check engagement. If you just plow through a script, the reporter may be mentally compiling his or her grocery store shopping list instead of listening to you.
  • Remember Seinfeld: no “close talking” please during demonstrations.
  • Don’t send cryptic press releases: be sure you describe your product, what it is and does, and its target audience.
  • Keep up with the staff: Stay current on the names of reporters; they change frequently. E-mail sent to former reporters may be automatically rejected or may linger in spam filters.

2011 InnovAction Award Winners Announced

COLPM The College of Law Practice Management today announced the recipients of the 2011 InnovAction Awards. The global law firm of Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP joins two law schools, The University of Miami School of Law and the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, as recipients of the coveted 2011 InnovAction Awards.

InnovAction For the seventh straight year, the InnovAction Awards have recognized outstanding innovation in the delivery of legal services demonstrating to the legal community what can happen when passionate professionals, with big ideas and strong convictions, resolve to create effective change.

“The five InnovAction judges were greatly impressed by the groundbreaking ideas in the submissions from law firms, law schools and companies in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom,” said Jordan Furlong, Partner with Edge International and chair of the 2011 awards program. “The winning entries exemplify how bold ideas and innovation can be implemented and shared among various stakeholders including lawyers, their clients, academics, prospective law students and legal administrators.”

Here are the 2011 InnovAction Award-winning entries:

  • Berwin Leighton Paisner, LLP (BLP) was selected for their Lawyers On Demand (LOD) initiative which began in 2007 after BLP observed two important issues affecting the UK Legal market: (1) legal services clients are wanting to find a way to stretch their budgets further and (2) many lawyers are looking for greater flexibility and autonomy in their work. BLP created LOD to address these issues. LOD challenged the traditional models of legal service delivery and brought talented freelance lawyers to work directly with clients. LOD lawyers work at the client office or their home office but are nevertheless vetted and supported by BLP know-how and resources, making the LOD service unique in the market. LOD began as a pilot in 2007 with eight lawyers. Since then, it has increased ten-fold in size and gained a fantastic list of clients.
  • The University of Toronto Faculty of Law was selected for its Internationally Trained Lawyers Program (ITLP). When immigrating to Canada, one of the biggest challenges internationally-trained lawyers (ITLs) face is the lack of access to opportunities to receive practical, hands-on experience in the Canadian legal environment, particularly during the lengthy accreditation and licensing process. In recognizing the limited opportunities for ITLs, the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law created a bridging program for ITLs who wish to practice law in Ontario. The ITLP is a comprehensive 10-month program to help participants obtain their license and secure full-time professional employment. The program includes intensive academic, cultural fluency and career development classroom sessions, designed to support international lawyers.
  • The University of Miami School of Law in partnership with five other law schools received an InnovAction Award for their LawWithoutWalls initiative. LawWithoutWalls is a part-virtual, collaborative academic model that unites students, faculty, practitioners, and entrepreneurs from around the world to innovate legal education and practice. It’s designed to help those engaged in the education and practice of law to embrace the impact of our changing world.  LawWithoutWalls exemplifies what 21st century education can be. Students are not educated on-line in the same old way. Instead, technology is utilized to create an entirely new educational experience, a platform for interdisciplinary interchange and community.

The awards will be presented on Friday, October 28, at a special session during the 2011 Futures Conference, held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the College of Law Practice Management in Chicago, IL.

ILTA Exhibitors Resource: Take a Peek at Last Year’s Law Firm Purchasing Survey

InsideLegal/ILTA 2010 Member Technology Purchasing SurveyEach year since 2006, ILTA has commissioned InsideLegal to produce the Annual ILTA Member Technology Purchasing Survey. This is a comprehensive, free market resource for ILTA members, non-ILTA firms, consultants/technologists and vendors to gauge the industry and develop a benchmark on what their peers/prospects are doing. The survey includes feedback from hundreds of ILTA law firms with 50 or more attorneys.

This is a particularly helpful document for ILTA exhibitors to review and be familiar with while planning their attendance at the upcoming conference. The updated survey for 2011 is now underway and we will be releasing that report at the upcoming ILTA Annual Conference August 21-25 in Nashville.

You can download the complete 2010 survey here, but below are some of the areas we currently cover:

  • What the law firms bought in the last 12 months
  • What the firms are buying in the next 12 months
  • What technologies were you most excited about
  • Are their budgets increasing or decreasing
  • How much can they sign off for vs. what has to go to executive committee
  • How much they spend per attorney on technology
  • What blogs/publications do they read
  • What influences/aids in their purchasing decision
  • What percentage of firm revenue do they spend on technology
  • Their/their users satisfaction with technologies implemented
  • What consultants they are working with

If you would like to be included on the distribution list to receive the 2011 survey, sign up (for free) with your email at InsideLegal.com. You can also email JoAnna Forshee with any questions regarding the project.
